You know, there’s always something to be said for a comfort watch. We don’t know what you queue up during a day that feels especially hellish, but your friends at Esquire love a good comedy or a musical. Thankfully, after a year which saw buzzy debuts from West Side Story and Licorice Pizza, 2022 is off to a solid start for both genres.
The slate of movie musicals kicked off with Cyrano, which is already amongst Peter Dinklage’s greatest roles. On the comedy side, we saw more Jackass. Surprisingly? We wanted to see more. Later in the year, we saw the greatest Nic Cage film to ever Nic Cage, in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, plus Turning Red, which proved to be another charming entry in the great Pixar canon. But let’s talk about the here and now. Here are the best comedies and musicals of 2022 so far.
